Dorset Police are advising communities to stay safe during Torch Relay celebrations when the flame arrives in the county on Thursday.

In a joint statement with NHS Dorset, the service issued safety points, such as keeping possessions safe, remembering to lock all doors and windows and removing valuables from vehicles.

They are urging the public to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, apply an SPF if the sun comes out and drink plenty of water when travelling to see the Torch Relay.

Dorset Police Inspector Alan Jenkins said: “The Torch Relay is the start of what will be a fantastic celebration of sport this summer as we look forward to welcoming the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Dorset.

“If you are going out to line the torch route or attend any of the planned celebrations, have a great time but please take care to keep your home and personal possessions safe and secure.

“With the Games just around the corner now, as well as lots of other exciting events happening in and around Dorset this summer, we want to make sure all of our communities and visitors have a fantastic and safe summer 2012.”

Inspector Jenkins added: “The Torch Relay is a celebration of sport and not a policing event so if you want to find out about the route or the local events taking place please don’t call police – you should visit the official Torch Relay or local authority websites for this information.”
