The Flower arranging display at the Sub-Tropical Gardens over the weekend of 22/23rd June was a success. The hard work put in by Mrs. Peggy Ford and her husband Henry provided a welcome addition to the build up for the Olympic Torch relay in Abbotsbury and Olympic Games in Weymouth and Portland. All the displays had an Olympic or Jubilee theme. Here are a list of the categories and the winners 1) A Decathlon Event, choice of any of the 10 events, (24inches allowed).
1st place Mary Bridle, 2nd Mary-Lou Anderson, 3rd Peggy Ford, highly commended Sue Roper.
2) The Olympic Torch (18inches allowed).
1st place Mary-Lou Anderson, 2nd Peggy Ford, 3rd Joan Haine, highly commended Sue Roper.
3) Her Majesty’s Jewels (petit) (9 inches overall).
1st place Sue Roper, 2nd Peggy Ford, 3rd Mary-Lou Anderson, commended Hazel Hutchings and Mary Bridle. Special congratulations to Sue Roper who won Best in Show for her beautiful design.
4) Boxing clever (20 inches allowed) A Novice class 1st place Theresa Bellenie, 2nd Lyn Symonds, 3rd Mary Philips, Special Nisy Bellenie.
Finally, a children’s class for ages 5 to 11 5) Weymouth Water (a boat made from vegetables, fruit or plant material or a combination of all) (12 inches allowed) 1st place Mya Bellenie. Congratulations to all those who took part. Thanks again to Bunty for her judging and comments for all participants.
The Olympic Torch is due in Abbotsbury on 12th July at 5.13pm. The two carriers will be Bob Holman, 67, from Dorchester and Fabian Peterkin, 16, who used to live in Abbotsbury. The Abbotsbury attractions will all be open with free admission from 2pm. The road through Abbotsbury will be closed at either end of the village from 4pm approximately and there will be no parking anywhere on the road through Abbotsbury to allow the torch and entourage safe passage. 28 Marshalls are required and if anyone wishes to be a Marshall on that day please contact Mr Henry Ford on 01305 871269 as soon as possible.
