A DORSET company has designed and made a swing-seat to give its occupants a magnificent view of the Olympic Stadium in London.
Martin Young, of Sitting Spiritually, based in Lyme Regis, was commissioned to provide the seat for the Olympic Park Gardens in Stratford, east London.
He has just seen his seats take pride of place at the RHS Chelsea flower show in designer Diarmuid Gavin’s Tower Garden.
In 2009, the RHS launched The Great British Garden Competition to recruit two amateur garden designers, and to celebrate the nation’s passion for gardening.
The new garden sits within the Olympic Park in Stratford, offering great views over the Olympic Stadium.
Out of 112 entries the winners were Rachel Read in the adult section and Hannah Clegg in the junior section.
The two designers worked with the Olympic Delivery Authority Team to realise their designs.
One of their requests was a personalised swing seat from Sitting Spiritually so visitors could enjoy the garden and views.
The designers had previously tried out the handcrafted swing seats at Chelsea.
Eco carpenter Martin designed the seat – a three-seater frame with curved back, and the inscription “Rachel & Hannah”.
The frame is Martin’s signature award-winning design, made from English oak, which is sourced locally.
Martin said the first he knew of the Olympic plan was when the garden’s landscape architect placed the order.
“The whole site is awesome to see and we are very pleased to be involved in something as prestigious as this.”
