a popular majorette squad is looking for new recruits.
The 33-strong Second Division Majorettes club from Portland has a packed summer schedule and boys and girls are being sought to bolster numbers.
The club recently moved to the Islanders Club For Young People to gain more space and the chance to practice on different surfaces.
Hayley Collins, one of the leaders, said: “We want to let people know that we are here and taking on new members from the ages of five and up.
“We’ve got 33 members aged from six to 16. Judging by our diary our troupe is very popular, there don’t seem to be many in this area.
“Anyone from this area can join us. We used to be a Portland troupe but we are open to anyone from anywhere to join.”
Portlander Mrs Collins said being a majorette has many benefits for youngsters, adding that her daughter Jessica, 14, has got a lot out of it.
She said: “It gives them a confidence boost. My daughter was quite a shy girl before. It enhances teamwork and gives them a chance to put something back into the community.
“Between April and September the team does displays all over. For them to go out there and put something on for the community to see is just wonderful.”
The majorettes have just three weekends off during the next 14 weeks.
She added: “We are busy going to fetes and things. We are voluntarily run.
“A lot of people are under the misconception that we get paid.
“We all do this because we love it and we have a great team.
“The girls all say it’s like a big family.
“We would really welcome any boys who want to join.
“Every show they go and do, I’m so proud of them. From seeing them coming along not knowing what to do with the baton, seeing how much they’ve changed and grown is amazing.”
Second Division Majorettes train between 4pm and 7.30pm every Wednesday at the Islanders’ Club on East Weare Road, Underhill.
Anyone who wants to find out more about majorettes should come along to a training session between 4pm and 5pm.
