A WEYMOUTH fitness club has donated bags of food as part of a national drive to help others.
Curves Fitness Club in Weymouth has donated 231 pounds of food to Dorset You First Outreach service after its 14th annual food drive.
Throughout March, both Curves members and the wider community donated non-perishable foods for the cause.
Food donated will allow Dorset You First Domestic Violence Outreach service to aid people who they work with who are homeless or threatened by homelessness.
Barbara Hart-Varca, owner of Curves Weymouth, said: “We are thrilled with the outstanding effort from our members and friends of Curves.
“Our members’ generosity is a true reflection of the Curves spirit and community. The food drive is a vital part of our community program that fits perfectly with the Curves philosophy of promoting positive health and creating a community for ‘real women’.
“We also want to say a big thank you to our local shop Asda for donating the first bags of non-perishable food and the continuous support from Sandra West, Asda’s community support officer. We look forward to many years of giving back to the community through deserving charities.”
This year, the Curves food drive collected a grand total of 93,587 kilograms from thousands of clubs across Europe, which will be distributed to a local food bank or charity of each club’s choice.
The UK Curves communities were responsible for around 23 per cent of this final contribution.
Sarah Smith, manager of You First, said: “Dorset You First Outreach Service find it really refreshing to see that local businesses are willing to support local charities and services and we would like to thank everyone involved for their huge efforts and it is greatly appreciated.
“New Curves members also contributed to the food drive through a special promotion which allowed them to join for a bag of donated food, instead of the regular joining fee.”
Curves, the UK’s largest women-only fitness club network, has donated more than 27.7 million kilos of food worldwide since 2004, enough to feed 1.85 million people for a week.
