FERRET racing proved the star attraction at an animal themed festival near Dorchester.

A host of indoor activites ensured wet weather could not stop Kingston Maur-ward College’s fun packed Animal Festival in support of National Pet Month.

Those who braved the elements were rewarded with the chance to meet a large variety of animals and reptiles and enjoy a range of entertainment.

Course manager for animal conservation and welfare Jo Scott said: “Morale was high, fun was had by staff and visitors – and the ever-popular ferret racing went down a storm.”

National Pet Month brings together organisations, professionals and pet lovers with the aim of improving welfare. Animal lovers will also be able to enjoy the college’s next major event when it hosts its annual Open Day and Country Fair on Sunday, June 17.

The packed programme of entertainment includes dog shows, birds of prey on display, a chance to check out the Animal Park and a demonstration by Wolf Man Shaun Ellis.

The event runs from 10am to 5pm with tickets costing £7 for adults and £6.50 for concessions but are free for season ticket holders and under 16s accompanied by at least one paying adult.
