ONCE again this report is coming to you from the hot and humid Fiji Islands, where we continue to carry out projects to benefit disadvantaged children.
Already on this visit we have been to the island of Beqa, where we have just completed a project to provide cooking and dining facilities for a remote school. Some of the children travel long distances to attend school, leaving early in the morning, often without breakfast. Many would have inadequate food for their lunch or they would eat it on their way to school, so they would be hungry during lessons. They would find it hard to concentrate and some would fall asleep and have to be woken by their teacher to be told it is time to walk home. The mothers in the local villages offered to cook lunches for all the children and just needed suitable premises and the necessary equipment.
We had already provided a building, so on this visit we travelled over to the island with all the pots, jugs, cooking utensils, plates, cups, knives, chopping boards and all the other things needed to prepare the lunches. It was quite an adventure loading everything on to a small boat to transport over to the island and wading ashore at the school with all the pots and pans! The school welcomed us with the usual ceremony and we were garlanded and given the traditional Fijian drink. The ladies who are now going to cook the meals received our donations and put on a special dance to thank us.
We have also been to the island of Kadavu to re-visit one of our kindergartens and to call at two more kindergartens, where we have provided outdoor play equipment.
We have just been to the island of Ovalau, where we attended the official opening of our latest kindergarten at Rukuruku and are now on Vanua Levu, where we have more projects to follow up.
