SHELTERBOX, based in Helston, Cornwall, will be the charity to benefit from the St Peter’s Harvest Supper, due to take place at 6.30 for 7pm on Saturday, 15 October, so it was marvellous to have one of their volunteers, Tony, come to talk to the congregation at last Sunday’s Morning Praise.

Tony explained that each box has a unique code so that it is possible to track each one down and as well as containing things you might expect – large tent, blankets, stove and cooking and eating utensils – there is also a school bag containing paper, crayons and pens to keep the children occupied. More details can be found at www.shelterbox.org.

Each box costs £590. This includes all the contents, air/sea freight and distribution. £250 was raised from Sunday’s collection and this will be added to proceeds from the Harvest Supper in the hope that St Peter’s will be able to fund a box.

If you’re not one of the lucky ones who already has tickets, I’m afraid they’re all sold out; but Liz Draper does have a waiting list. Contact her on 871316. I’m told there are some fantastic raffle prizes, many food and drink related, so please come well prepared to give to this exceptionally worthy cause!

RBL Ladies meet tonight,Monday, 10 October, for their AGM with cheese and wine at 7.30pm in the Ron Doble room at the village hall, while the RBL branch committee meet at the same venue and time on Thursday, 13 October.

THE village hall is also the venue for the next meeting of Portesham WI on Tuesday, 11 October, where Martin Fielding will talk about his life as a vet.

THE destination of the next Diamond Club trip will be ... a mystery! The mystery tour(North) will leave Portesham at 1.05pm on Tuesday, 18 October. Contact Anita Buckland for details.

PORTESHAM volunteers raised over £1000 at their recent village cafe – a tremendous achievement. They hope to use part of the proceeds to fund grit bins when details are finalised and have had requests for more spring bulbs and primroses to be planted.

Another idea under consideration is for the village to buy a Christmas tree (I very much like this idea!). The Kings Arms pub has offered a site on their lawn and would share the cost of the tree and power for lights.

Any feedback and suggestions are always welcome. Please speak to any of the volunteers.
