A COMMUNITY group on Portland have reached another milestone in enhancing their ‘village’.

Visitors to Easton are now greeted by a striking marker stone which has been installed at the top of Easton Lane.

It is thanks to the efforts of the Easton Community Group.

The placing of the stone was timed to mark the 10th anniversary of the founding of the community group which, during the past decade through holding major fundraising events, has done much to enhance the village surroundings.

This has included work carried out in Easton Gardens in conjunction with Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s Parks Department and the equipment it has funded for the children’s playground within the gardens.

The new stone welcoming all to Easton was commissioned by the group and the block of stone from Independent Quarry was donated by Albion Stone.

The engraving was carried out by stonemason Martin Green, 38, factory foreman with Albion.

Mr Green portrayed the environment with his skilful carving which covers all parts of the stone.

He said: “With my love of our environment and my ‘Green’ name, I could think of no better way to welcome everyone to Easton.”

Members of the community group, representatives of the borough Parks Department and Albion’s production manager Richard Moore were among those present to see the stone in situ.

Group secretary June Morley said: “All of us in the group are really proud of the accomplishment of Martin Green and this work is truly worthy of the island and its men of stone.”
