HOPES of breaking a nautical record were dashed when a lack of breeze postponed a windsurfing race.

Competitors for the Harbour Dash 2011 were unable to sail from Overcombe Beach in Weymouth to Portland Harbour and back yesterday because of the calm conditions.

Windsurfers were hoping to smash a record set by Adie Bugler that has been held for more than 20 years. Instead, the 20 competitors found themselves waiting for wind and managed a short race.

Tris Best, managing director of the Official Test Centre based at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, said: “The water was like a mill pond. It really was the luck of the draw. There was no chance of breaking the record in these conditions. We’re going to get everyone together to do it again soon.”

The Harbour Dash has been held annually in the borough for more than 30 years. Money raised this year was going to support the Will Mackaness Trust.
