Today I took advantage of the late September sunshine and went for a walk on Portland with my granddaughter in her pram.

One stretch of my walk took me from Portland Heights down Wide Street to St George’s Church.

In the time it took me to walk that distance I saw three people driving their cars with mobile phones stuck to their ears.

Why do people continue to flout the law in this way?

Is it because the penalties are nowhere near harsh enough? It really is time that this law was given some bigger teeth to act as a real deterrent.

And while I am on my soapbox, I would ban smoking behind the wheel as well – another thoroughly dangerous practice.
