INTREPID Portlanders showed that community spirit prevailed against ‘lousy’ weather.
The Red Triangle Cricket Club’s annual fete was hailed a ‘very successful day’ despite the poor conditions.
Around 100 people braved the damp at the WindowMan Oval to support the charity event, aimed at raising money for the club.
Activities on offer included tug o’ war, a performance from the Second Edition Majorettes, music by Portland Rocks, horseshoe throwing, street dancing, a bouncy castle, a barbecue, cakes, and many more food and arts and crafts stalls.
Participant Michael Colebrook was unlucky enough to endure an extra soaking while taking part in the wet sponge throwing event.
Grant Neven, the club secretary, was pleased with how well the day went and said his highlight was the tug o’ war: “It was the fire service against the cricketers.
“Unfortunately, they were wearing big, heavy boots and we were only wearing trainers.
“It was a 2-1 win for the fire service.”
Mr Neven added: “We got a little bit of mud on us, so to say.
“It was an excellent family day, enjoyed by all.”
Melody Wilding, troupe leader for the Second Edition Majorettes, had 30 girls performing at the event.
She said: “It was quite a good turn-out, despite the weather. Around 100 people showed up.
“Thankfully, the rain held off while the girls were performing and everybody turned up despite the rain.”
The Red Triangle Cricket Club was inaugurated in 1922 as the first civilian cricket club to be formed on Portland.
It continues to strive towards making a valuable contribution to the Portland community.
