Author’s crazy creations brought to life at school WACKY characters from the pages of the world’s favourite children’s author became real during a celebration of his life.
Around 760 pupils and staff from Holy Trinity School marked Roald Dahl’s birthday with a day of learning based around his books.
Pupils dressed either as characters from his best known tales or in yellow, the authors favourite colour.
The children were allowed to design their own lesson during the day as long as they linked them to his stories.
During science lessons the children mixed liquids and fluids from the kitchen and bathroom to see how they reacted to mimic George and his Marvellous Medicine.
In the maths class children counted out chocolate and back in the science rooms melted different pieces together to form new bars as they acted out the scenes from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Pupils also wrote stories and year six pupils performed dramatic re-enactments of scenes from the books.
Nicola Banner, the literacy head at the school, said everyone had a lot of fun during the day.
She said: “This was the first year we have done it. We decided to take part after we saw it advertised and thought it was something to start the year and get us fired up for learning.
“We have a big drive on reading this year so we are trying to get the children enthusiastic for reading and this helped kick start the school year with our most popular author.
“It went extremely well, there were some amazing costumes and parents put in such an amazing effort with such short notice and lots of teachers made a great effort with fantastic costumes and great enthusiasm.”
She added: “There was a real buzz around the school. I think that the fact the children designed their own lessons in some classes made it much more pleasant for them and therefore they were much more engaged.”
The day coincided with the official Roald Dahl day and the 50th anniversary of the release of his James and the Giant Peach book.
His greatest and best loved books also include Danny the Champion of the World, The Twits and The Fantastic Mr Fox.
