VOLUNTEER cooks whipped up a storm to show off the array of dishes they will be offering to over 50s on Portland.
Six Portland Friendly Food Club helpers have been honing their culinary skills and undertaking food hygiene certificates over the past six weeks ahead of the launch of a new Lunch Club on the island.
Tony Gibbons who is a National Community Champion for the Training and Learning Company, is working in partnership with Island Community Action to offer affordable and interesting lunches for older island residents at the Community 2000 building in Straits, Easton, next to All Saints Church.
The project is being funded by the Weymouth and Portland Partner-ship, Dorset Adult Learning and Synergy Housing Limited but once the weekly Lunch Club begins it will be self-supporting.
A cookery demonstration and buffet given to island group representatives featured dishes such as butternut squash and carrot soup, Mediterranean chicken bake, steak and kidney pie with chocolate, shepherd’s pie, steamed salmon with Thai spices, quiche, roast pepper tart, Goan fish and coconut curry and chocolate desserts.
Former cafe owner Mr Gibbons said: “These six people have been working with me for the past six weeks. The idea is to set up a lunch club for people aged over 50, from around Portland and Weymouth.
“It’s basically going to provide a social area for older people.
Would-be Friendly Food Club volunteers are urged to call Tony Gibbons on 01308 868700 or email tony.gibbons01@sky.com
