A Bugler (Letters, September 15) suggests that Weymouth Civic Society supports the idea of a link road from Chickerell to Portland.

If so, he should think again.

As well as impacting the Heritage Coast and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this road would threaten a special protection area for birds, wetlands of international importance and a special area of conservation.

It is difficult to see how the Civic Society can reconcile support for such a road with their proclaimed objective ‘to secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic, public or natural interest in the area’. Even if they can twist their thinking to fit, they should surely recognise that this road is simply not going to be built in the foreseeable future, because the Weymouth Relief Road has used up all our allowance under the Regional Funding Allocation, and there is nothing more to be had. Of course the Conservative and LibDem politicians who control Weymouth as well as Westminster are planning to allow any greenfield site to be developed as long as it does not conflict with a current local plan. And to make sure that is not too much of an impediment here in Weymouth, they are letting our local plan lapse!

But that means unbridled development of Markham and Little Francis rather than a road from Chickerell to Portland – cause enough for shame, but better than the devastation of Foxholes and Martleaves.
