A WALK along the Jurassic coast has been voted the best in Britain.
A Ramblers’ poll reveals the journey along the clifftops from Kimmeridge to Durdle Door is the nation’s favourite.
A spokesman for the Ramblers said: “A staggering 249million visits were made to coastal locations in the last year and whether you’re after the picture postcard views of Durdle Door or the more rugged beauty of the North Yorkshire seaside the English coast has something for everyone.
“That’s why the Ramblers has a vision of a continuous English coastal path, a route which would take in cliff-top walks, breathtaking shorelines, an abundance of wildlife and millions of years of the earth’s history, as well as breathing new life to our coastal villages and seaside towns.
“This vision led to the groundbreaking Marine and Coastal Access Act. However, we could be about to lose this magnificent path before any of us have even set foot on it.”
A shift in government focus means that the coastal path has dropped off the priority list.
The spokesman added: “The planning and design of the route is being delayed and there is a lack of commitment from those in power to create this wonderful path around the entire English coast.
“At this rate the dream of a national trail that explores England’s stunning coastline may remain just a dream.”
The Ramblers are calling on the government to assert their support for the English Coastal path and set the next stages of this exciting project in motion.
Ramblers chief executive Tom Franklin said: “As an island nation, we all know the awe-inspiring, soul restoring influence of a walk by the sea.
“That’s why we’re urging the government to firmly state their ongoing commitment to an all England coastal path.”
