ISLANDERS are getting a say on what they want from their carnival.

Organisers of a project to bring back Portland Carnival for 2012 are giving people in the community the chance to have a say on what they want from the event.

They are launching consultation for people to fill in with different ideas on where they want the carnival route to go, whether they want a walking procession, a vehicle procession or both and whether people want a Carnival Queen and King.

Chairman of the carnival Fi Woods said that the project needed Portlanders to get behind it and make their voices heard.

She said: “The carnival is going to bring all of Portland together across all parts of the community. We want everybody to be involved, we want to see the community coming together.

“Many people that remember Portland Cranioval talk about the golden days. Everyone talks about what a wonderful carnival it was and a wonderful community event and we want to bring it back for Portland.”

She added: “We want the people of Portland to have something that is for them because it’s Portland and we love it.”

She said that it would be something that the group wanted to get as many people involved in as possible and hoped it would grow into a yearly event.

She said: “We want to make it something that Portland can be proud of. We are hoping it will become a yearly event for Portland. We would like to make it a carnival week which could include the Portland Show and the Big Grove Festival that would be our long term aim.”

Residents will have three weeks from today to fill in the form and send it back to the Echo on the Gramby Industrial Estate, or return it to the ICA, 6 Reforne, Portland.

The form can also be completed online at www.portlandcarnival.co.cc The next Portland Carnival Meeting will be held on Monday, September 19 from 7pm to 8.30pm at The Open ArmsCentre in Easton Square and everyone is welcome.
