FLAGS will be waved when a church holds its version of the Last Night of the Proms.

All Saints Church at Piddletrenthide is lining up an array of popular music from top musicians at the charity evening on Friday from 7.30pm.

Old favourites like Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory and, of course, the national anthem will be belted out, with the audience encouraged to sing along.

Internationally-renowned tenor John Hudson – who lives in nearby Piddlehinton – tops the bill. He will be joined by local singer Magdalena Atkinson.

In the second half of the evening Deirdre Ashton, a singer who performs with a number of Dorset choirs and the Bournemouth and London Philharmonic choirs as a soloist, will perform a number of tunes including Rule Britannia.

Accompanying the singers will be pianist Elizabeth Sweetnam. There will also be performances from the Durnovaria Silver Band.

Janet Keen, who has organised the event along with Sue Beckingham, said: “The programme truly includes something for everyone, with arias, popular songs and music as well as Last Night of the Proms regulars.

“We are fortunate to have the services of John Hudson for free. He is donating his share of the proceeds to the Piddle Valley School. “All our singers and the pianist are donating their fees to local charities. It’s the first event of its kind to be performed in the Piddle Valley.”

The programme will be split into two with canapés, included in the ticket price, being served in the interval and wine and soft drinks available to buy.

Tickets cost £10 for adults with canapés and a flag. They are available from the Piddletrenthide Post Office or call Sue on 01300 348865 or Janet on 01300 348851.
