PAM Dickinson and fellow residents have endured traffic congestion for a long time and her concern is very understandable.
Experience has shown any alternative, really useful route will be seized upon by the average motorist regardless of the amenity effect on residents.
Traffic calming methods should be cautiously considered and avoided unless really essential. Road humps are a menace for car suspensions and tyres and probably only welcomed by the car repair firms.
Older properties near the roadside are alleged to suffer serious vibration problems to their foundations.
Certainly the suggested removal of existing double yellow lines would make sense.
The Broadway/Upwey north junction may probably need a modest slip road type exit to give adequate sighting-space and time to allow heavy, slow-starting vehicles (eg buses) to safely join a busy rising gradient high speed (60mph) road.
Should Dorchester Road become a modestly-used ‘rat run’ then the residents affected will have to regard the undoubted improved property values as reasonable long-term compensation.
It’s my present personal opinion the appeal of a smooth journey on the new excellent relief road in both directions will discourage the majority to reject creating a feared ‘rat run’.
The Broadway/Upwey residents would also enjoy the resumption of the valued through bus service to and from Dorchester.
