A few days ago I dropped off my wife at the Weymouth Library, and walked down St Thomas Street to visit the Argos store. I returned to the library via St. Mary’s Street.
It was just after 9.15am. The shops were open, lights on full, with staff talking to each other, waiting for customers to arrive.
The electric meter, heating, business rates, plus wages were running up a staggering bill.
The death wish of the supermarkets were eating away the high street in front of my eyes, and the jobs of hundreds of workers.
The supermarket war is in full swing. Asda with a £11million facelift, Morrisons with a similar expansion, and Sainsbury's arriving in 2013, what hope for the future of the High Street?
Well, it looks like the council loves having lots of pubs, so perhaps we will end up with 500-plus pubs in town within a decade.
Then the supermarkets will further cut their beer prices, and we can all get canned out of our heads for 50 pence.
