I MUST be a genius. As soon as I read that that Dorset County Council had made an error and still needed to save another £6million pounds I thought ‘well, don’t build a new library on the Charles Street site, that would take care of the problem’.
If I understand correctly, should the new library go ahead, the library vehicles and some of the stock will be located somewhere heading out of town on Bridport Road and some of the staff will remain in the present building.
Surely it would be more economical and efficient if all of these remained at the same location as at present.
Where is the justification for this move and the closure of so many small libraries? I am yet to hear of any.
The present library is well situated with adjacent parking and perfectly adequate facilities.
As for the present West Dorset District Council offices, these have been considered not the best building for offices for a long time. So, why push for it now? Certainly from a financial point of view it is not the best time for relocation nor Charles Street the best site, And another thing, wouldn’t it be a good idea to hang fire for a while and see how the Brewery site progresses, which shops, restaurants and so on are located there?
However, if the Charles Street development is to go ahead another way must be found to keep the developers on board without this relocation.
