A TEENAGER who lost her mother and grandfather to cancer has been prompted to do something in their memory.
Budmouth College student Kirsty Frampton, 16, is putting together an art show featuring the work of cancer patients who are encouraged to paint during creative therapy sessions at the Joseph Weld Hospice in Dorchester.
Kirsty was inspired to organise the exhibition because her late granddad, removal firm boss Peter Frampton who lost a battle with cancer in 2007 aged 68, was a day patient at Trimar Hospice in Weymouth and attended some of the painting sessions.
Weldmar Hospicecare Trust, which will benefit from next Thursday’s art exhibition, is a charity close to the family’s heart as Kirsty’s mum Rachael Frampton was also treated by the organisation. She died at the Joseph Weld Hospice in 2003 aged 34 following a battle with ovarian cancer.
Kirsty, 16, who lives on Portland with dad Dean and older sister Kayla, said: “I’m doing an Extended Project Qualification as an A-level and basically we can choose to do any project we like.
“I tried to think of something a bit different and thought about my granddad and his artwork.
“He had never held a paintbrush before he went to the art sessions and what he did was fantastic. I think what Weldmar do with patients at the therapy sessions is amazing and I thought it would be a good idea to exhibit their work.”
Kirsty has made posters, sent out invites, arranged an exhibition space and has been working with Rosetta Life artist Tom Weld, the art co-ordinator at Weldmar. Some of Kirsty’s granddad’s paintings will be on display, as well as photography and paintings produced by other patients.
Kirsty said: “I’m not sure how many pieces will be on display but I’d like to create an interesting exhibition space.
“Some of the artists will be there too if they feel up to it.”
Kirsty is also doing A-levels in drama, health and social care and psychology. She hopes to go on to university and is thinking of a career in care or joining the police.
Visitors to the exhibition will be encouraged to make a donation to Weldmar. Some of the paintings will also be for sale with proceeds also going to the charity. The exhibition will take place at the Everdene Hall at Budmouth College on Thursday, June 16 from 6.30pm to 9pm.
