A TEENAGER is ‘on top of the world’ after making it through training to become a Royal Marine.

Jason Osmond, 18, from West Lulworth, was one of only 15 out of 60 new entrants to complete his 33-week Commando training course and make it through to the passing out parade in front of his proud family.

His training was based at the Commando Training Centre for Royal Marines at Lympstone, near Exmouth and he is now undergoing vehicle training before joining 40 Commando in Taunton, Somerset.

An overjoyed Jason said: “I’m mega pleased.

“I’m on top of the world at the minute.

“I’m just looking forward to getting to Taunton and want to get a tour under my belt.”

Jason is expecting to make his first trip to Afghanistan in April next year.

He said the training was physically tough and became a big test mentally as it reached the later stages with intensive training exercises in Dartmoor and Wales.

He said: “I would say it was harder mentally.

“You’ve got to be fit but the later stages of the training do get really tough.

“You are away a lot longer and the physical challenges are really hard as well.”

His mum Kim Osmond, 47, remembers Jason leaving their West Lulworth home aged 17 on August bank holiday Monday last year to join 118 Troop at Lympstone.

Jason’s passing out was also at Lympstone where he was joined by his mum, dad Roy, 52, and brothers Carl, 31, himself a petty officer in the Royal Navy, and younger brother Toby, 15.

Mrs Osmond said: “We are obviously very proud.

“He was put through one of the toughest military training programs.

“The pass out parade was absolutely fantastic and we’ve never felt prouder of Jason.”

Roy added: “It was quite emotional to watch the passing out because his training was so hard.

“And I think he’s one of the first Lulworth boys to become a Royal Marine.

“A lot of the veterans in the village have said that.”
