The funeral has taken place at Farnborough of Harry Croxford, aged 89.

Harry worked in Joy’s Convenience Store at Overcombe Corner for over 20 years, and in that time developed a loyal band of followers amongst those who dropped in for their papers early in the morning.

His unique sense of humour endeared him to many, and he was known to 2CR radio listeners as ‘Harry the gas’ for his willingness to present his forthright opinions at some length!

Harry moved to Weymouth with his wife Gwen in 1974, and, when not watching Weymouth football team, became a stalwart of Greenhill Bowling Club. There was a special presentation when he retired after 16 years of organising the Weymouth & Portland Bowls Tournament, a labour of love.

A bit further afield, he and Gwen were active volunteers on the Swanage Steam Railway, especially during the Santa Special season, and both loved Weymouth. They could often be spotted walking along the quayside.

I know that that the thoughts of his many Weymouth friends will be with Gwen and the family at this sad time.

A last reminder about the Weymouth East Scouts and Guides who meet in the Scutt Hall. will be holding their Beach Stall on Wednesday 22 June.

They would be grateful for any good quality items – no clothes this time please – that they can sell on the day to raise funds. If you have any surplus goods, Betty Hennessey would be grateful for a call on 833614.

David Martin is already organising the Scarecrow competition to be held in Sutton Poyntz This will start on Saturday 23rd July and finish with a presentation of the prize at the Village Vegetable Show on Saturday 6th August for the best entry, chosen by you – well, not just you, but everyone, if you know what I mean.

David would like to have entries by Saturday 9th July so that he can prepare a map of where they can be located, so call him on 836322 if you would like to take part.

There were 23 entries last year, all of a very high standard, and a tour of the village, starting by picking up your map and voting form from the Springhead Pub and finishing with a pint there while you debate your choice of winner, is a great family outing.
