TWO Weymouth friends have completed a 100 mile walk to raise £2,000 for charity.

Claire Whiles, 45, from Chickerell Road, Weymouth and Janis Martin, 51, from Blenheim Road in Weymouth undertook their Jurassic Jaunt challenge from Dartmouth along the coastal path back to Ferrybridge.

The friends did the week-long walk for CANCERactive, Britain's number one holistic cancer information charity that aims to give people all the information about traditional and complimentary cancer treatments.

The pair were joined on the last leg of their walk from Abbotsbury to Ferrybridge by 30 friends, family and well-wishers.

Mrs Whiles said that the pair were delighted to cross the finish line and raise £2,000 for CANCERactive. She said: “I think Janis and I were quite chocked up, it was the end of a long week.

“We were walking about nine hours every day. The only part of the coastal path that is classified as easy is the bit from Abbotsbury. It was quite heavy going.”

Every morning the walkers started at 8am. Mrs Whiles said: “It was heads down, off you go. We thought we would sit on the beach and have a paddle at lunch but it wasn't like that. We didn't have time, we had to keep going.”

The pair were bowled over by people's generosity on the route, with people stopping them to donate as they walked. They attached inflatable dinosaurs to their backpacks to stand out on the walk.

Mrs Whiles said: “We met some lovely people along the way and people donated to us. We would like to say a special thank you to everybody who sponsored us and to everyone that let us stay with them along the route.”

The friends had to deal with blisters and injury along the route. Mrs Whiles said: “I hurt the tendons in one of my feet, but it's one of those things. When people are kind enough to sponsor you it should be a challenge.”

She added: “The toughest bit was walking from Seaton to Seatown. At the end of a 14 mile day we had to go up and come down Golden Cap. But it was worth it, the views were amazing.

“The best bit was the kindness of people along the way. We were in a cafe in Paignton and a man got out his wallet and gave us £20.”

The pair will be presenting a cheque to representatives from CANCERactive on Friday, July 8 at the Light and Energy Centre in the Jubilee Enterprise Centre, Weymouth. Everybody will be welcome to the event.
