BUDDING Dorset farmers are getting their skills recognised with a new award.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has launched a new agricultural student of the year award to recognise the skills of young farmers.

Seventeen second year Level 3 Diploma in Agriculture students at Kingston Maurward College near Dorchester will take part in the contest.

The competition will consist of a series of tests including livestock, machinery and estate skill tasks followed by a 50-question multiple choice paper.

The top three students will then be taken through to the final round which will be an interview in front of a panel of judges from the college, the event’s sponsors and the NFU.

The competition will take place on June 29 and the winning student will walk away with the specially designed bronze trophy featuring a tree, gate and shepherd’s crook.
