I live on Buxton Road and since the implementation of the ‘intelligent lights’ the journey into Weymouth via Rodwell Road has been, to put it politely, ridiculous.
This morning, I caught a bus on Buxton Road at 11.14am. We reached the Asda traffic lights at 11.40am.
We then had a smooth journey to Swannery Bridge but did not reach the Debenham’s bus stop until noon.
Forty-six minutes from Buxton Road to Debenhams on public transport is not acceptable.
I thought the public were being encouraged to use public transport.
Let me highlight the problem: Coming down Rodwell Road, when the lights change to green, the road in front is full of traffic which is released from Wyke Road.
Therefore a maximum of one to two vehicles cross the junction. The traffic coming up Rodwell Road is also cleared to turn right into Wyke Road.
The lights then change to release traffic travelling down Rodwell Road. Unfortunately the traffic released from Wyke Road has filled the junction so nothing moves.
At the same time traffic is released from Chickerell Road compounding the problem.
The lights at Asda are of course red so nothing moves.
The bus I was travelling on couldn’t use the very short, and ridiculous, length of bus lane on Rodwell Road as a lorry was in the outside lane.
Whoever measured the road and decided to put in a short bus lane obviously didn’t consider that lorries might use the road as well. I do appreciate all of the official comments in the Echo that the system is not complete and things will improve.
However, the lights on Rodwell Road and Asda have now been completed for some months and the situation is only getting worse.
I have just spent the weekend in the Cotswolds and on my journey back to Weymouth of some 124 miles, I only encountered five sets of traffic lights.
Every other county has roundabouts.
Has Weymouth developed something unique that every other county in the country should follow despite public opinion being 100 per cent against it?
