I recently took my daughter to the Plaza Cinema in Dorchester and spent a pleasant evening watching Pirates of the Caribbean 4, not least because of Johnny Depp, but because of the warm welcome we received from the staff, the range of refreshments available and the excellently-priced seats with plenty of leg room (we could remain seated whilst others went past).

I’d like to applaud their recent refurbishment and inclusion of a third screen, and congratulate this family-run establishment for giving the Empires and Cineworlds a run for their money.

I was very disappointed though when the lights went up to realise the laziness and lack of respect shown by a minority of the cinema-goers with the amount of mess and litter left – even some parents weren’t encouraging their offspring to take responsibility for themselves.

Even with bins available in all screens, the staff have to run around clearing up before the next showing and I felt so sorry for them.

Surely the value for money prices they charge is a reason to show your appreciation, not an excuse to leave the place a mess?

It would be a real shame if we ever lost this town centre facility to the multiplex with over-inflated prices that is proposed at the new Brewery Square development – couldn’t the council consider a bowling alley, ice rink or something to provide an alternative attraction for the town that would complement the existing facilities?

I say ‘Thank you and keep up the good work Plaza!’
