I was returning to Weymouth in my car after a day out when I noticed our poor ‘pineapples’ languishing in what looked like a rubbish tip (I learnt subsequently that this was to be the ‘park-and-ride’).
There is now nothing to welcome visitors to Weymouth & Portland at the Ridgeway!
To all intents the borough appears totally anonymous.
Having often visited New Zealand I was impressed with the manner in which Auckland promoted itself as the City of Sails with advertising displays and plaques.
Surely it is not beyond the capabilities of our wonderful Council to produce a welcoming construction at the top of Ridgeway.
A representation of a boat or, maybe, a ‘spinnaker’ sail made from our beautiful portland stone seems to be an obvious emblem given that our fantastic Sailing area of the Harbour and Bay is equally as good as that of Auckland.
It would also be appropriate as a reference to the Sailing Olympics.
There is time yet for our excellent stonemasons to design and make a pair of matching carvings.
There might even be some interest in the general public subscribing to such a welcome to Weymouth & Portland.
