THOUSANDS flocked to Poundbury to enjoy a community fun day organised by Dorchester Town Football Club.

The community united on The Great Field on Sunday where there was fun to be had for all the family.

Dorchester Town FC has since vowed to hold the event every year, making it ‘bigger and better than ever’ each time.

Face painting, inflatables, tug-o-war, arts and crafts, dancing, a mini soccer tournament and a dog show were among the many activities family fun day goers were able to get involved in.

There was also live music, a licensed bar and a beer tent for real ale lovers.

One of the organisers, Dave Read, estimated that around 2,000 people attended the event.

He said: “The Dorchester Town Football Club Community Fun Day got off to a fantastic start, with several thousand people enjoying the huge range of events that took place throughout the day.

“Local people enjoyed a football tournament, fun fair, dog show, an all day open air pop concert plus all the other fun that a fete provides.

“There was also dancing displays, by Distinction Dance Company, which kept people at the Poundbury Field throughout the day.”

He added: “The organisers would like to thank all their sponsors and say a big thank you to performers Fronttoback, Acoustic Lighthouse, Greg Ryall, Sylva, Last Chance and Bad Connection - plus Dave Morton for providing the sound equipment.”

It was the first event of its kind, in that it was organised by the football club, for more than a decade.

One of the other organisers, Mark Cope, who is also one of the associate directors at the club, said the aim of the event was to bring local people together and promote Dorchester Town FC.

Mr Cope, of Castle Park, said club chairman Shaun Hearn was ‘keen to bring back community events of this nature to the role of the football club’.

He said: “The day was absolutely fantastic.

“We had a massive turn out and lots of families were there which was the main point of the event.

“I think this was a great start in bringing back community events of this nature to the role of the football club.

“We’re going to be holding this every year now and we hope that each time it will get bigger and better than ever.”
