ORGANISERS of a popular Portland show are gearing up for this year’s event – which will be held off the island for the first time.
The Portland Steam and Vintage Show, which attracts exhibitors from all over the country, has been held for the past 12 years in a 10-acre field at Southwell Business Park.
Organisers have been told they cannot use the site on its usual date in July in 2012 as it will be used for media parking during the Olympics.
They began a search for a new site and found an ideal spot courtesy of the Vine and Hollins families at Moor Farm, Knights in the Bottom, near Chickerell.
Show chairman Mick Mulley said it was decided to move the show this year so people can get used to the site.
The 13th show will be held over the weekend of July 16 and 17.
Mr Mulley doesn’t envisage the show will move back to the island but it will keep its Portland name.
He said exhibitors will not miss the steep hill getting to Southwell and the fierce wind blowing in from the sea. The new site off the B3157 coast road is large with good access and has room to expand in future.
There will be free parking available for visitors throughout the weekend.
Assistant organiser Andy Spracklen has been overwhelmed with support from the community.
He said: “Chickerell Town Council has been very helpful.
“They have welcomed us with open arms.”
When asked about this year’s events, he added: “We have had a lot of good response from the public.
“We are hoping for our best turnout yet, last year there were 6-8,000 people at the show, and we want to raise that.”
Attractions include steam engines, classic cars and motorbikes, military vehicles, vintage tractors and caravans, arena displays, trade stands, dog agility shows, and children’s attractions. The Portsmouth Wild West Association will be performing twice daily.
South West Coaches will be running a regular shuttle to the site from Weymouth.
Places are available in the model tent and classic caravan sections.
There are pitches available in the craft marquee for anyone wishing to sell their homemade arts and crafts. Tickets cost £6 for adults and £3 for children. For details contact Andy Spracklen on 01305 765810 or 784688, or visit theportlandsteamshow.co.uk
