A DORSET town is joining the quest to find inspirational people to carry the Olympic flame across the United Kingdom.
Officials in Shaftesbury are appealing for the public to nominate ‘very special local people’ to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) needs 8,000 inspiring people and is urging communities to nominate representatives to be a London 2012 Olympic Torchbearer.
Chairman of Shaftesbury and district Tourism association, David Shepherd, said: “The flame has to travel from Salisbury on July 11 to Weymouth and Portland on July 12, 2012.
“Barton Hill Recreational Trust, Shaftesbury and District Tourism Association and the Blackmore Vale Tourism Company, along with Robert Walter MP and David Booth at Shaftesbury School, are working hard to have the Olympic torch pass through Shaftesbury on its way to Weymouth and Portland.
“The deadline is getting closer in which to nominate these very special local people and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that will live in the memory of those chosen people.
“Please help us to nominate as many inspirational people as possible from around Shaftesbury to aid our bid to have the iconic flame visit our historic town.”
Nominations can be made at london2012.com/games/olympic-torch-relay/carrying-the-olympic-flame The deadline is June 29 this year.
