It appears to me that the whole question of library closures/funding withdrawal is becoming more of a fait accompli.
Dorset County Council is holding all the cards and seem to be merely going through the motions of affording library users the opportunity of putting forward their objections.
Little or no thought appears to have been given to the severe setback the council's proposals will have on the community life of villages, where most of the targeting of libraries is taking place.
In formulating these proposals, the council appears to be confining their thinking to the abstract problem of finances, ignoring the human consequences that would inevitably result.
The library is undoubtedly the focal point of day-to-day village life, and its loss would be devastating.
It has always been my impression that the council takes community welfare very seriously, but it would appear that they are willing to subordinate this to the impersonal world of economics.
This surely cannot be right.
