I write following the excellent letter from John Peace of Slow Food Dorset and the question of local food at the Olympics (Your Say, May 17).
We have a host of great local or fair food producers who could be promoted in 2012.
I attended an Olympic planning event representing the NHS and met with county and national bodies last year and made the same suggestion.
The response was that commercial sponsorship deals had been signed with corporations including a well known American hamburger chain.
This excluded local producers from the venue. This is awful.
What a wasted opportunity to promote local and healthy food on a world stage.
Shall we hold our own local games in 2012?
Bronze, silver or gold medals for newcomers with no recent sport activity, who could enter track and field events – with additional categories for novice gardeners in fruit and vegetables and prizes for the most weight loss by the time of the alternative games.
Healthy local food is not of interest to big business or money-grabbing organisers.
In Edinburgh the fringe is now more vital than the official events.
Why not a healthy Olympics for normal people that could celebrate local good food?
