TWO footballers have been kicked off their Sunday team after being arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Charges have yet to be brought against the two members of Weymouth-based Rendezvous FC, who have been released on bail while police inquiries continue.

Their alleged drunken antics relate to vandalism that occurred at buildings belonging to Agincare care providers and Real World security services in St Alban Street.

Police said CCTV cameras captured people entering the building after climbing up scaffolding. Officers said a fire extinguisher was let off inside and graffiti was carried out.

Prior to the incident, the team were treated to an afternoon buffet at the Rendezvous nightclub on the Town Bridge – the venue which sponsors them – and then continued drinking at various bars across the town.

Rendezvous nightclub manager Keith Treggiden said: “We’re not at present withdrawing our sponsorship from the team.

“I understand the two guys in question, who are accused of causing damage that night, have been kicked off the football team.”

Mr Treggiden said the team played in the Dorset County Cup final and lost 1-0 – and suggested their alleged behaviour last month was ‘totally out of character.’ Rendezvous FC members were unavailable for comment.

A Dorset Police spokesman said: “Two people have been arrested on suspicion of burglary.

“The first is a 29-year-old man from Weymouth and the second is a 23-year old man from Weymouth.

“Both have been released on police bail until early June.”

The spokesman added: “Police were called at 7.05am on Monday, April 18, reporting that two men had been seen on CCTV entering the building after climbing up scaffolding and that they had let off a fire extinguisher inside the building.

“It does also appear that graffiti was left inside the building.”
