RESIDENTS made calls for CCTV to be installed after lines of cars were left with hammer sized holes in their windscreens and rear windows were shattered.
Simon Sharpe’s Ford Fiesta was one of the first cars hit in Kestrel View and he said when it was hit it sounded like a gunshot.
Mr Sharpe, 48, started his work as a printer later in the day after spending the morning clearing the glass.
He said: “My back window nearly came completely out.
“I cleaned it all up but it’s a nightmare.
“It’s unbelievable and the worst thing is I’ve had two windows hit and I’m not fully comp.
“I’ve just been quoted £408.
Daniel Hirst, 26, was at home with his girlfriend Melissa Dacey, 26, when their neighbour told them his Peugeot 207 had been damaged.
“He saw them run off,” he said.
“And my neighbours said he is going to put his own CCTV in as he thinks it’s a group of mates seeing who can do the most.”
Tracey Barber, 45, was using her vacuum cleaner to try and clean her Peugeot 406 in Canberra Cresent.
Her husband Steve’s car was also hit.
She said: “I’m mortified. It’s an absolute nightmare.
“We were going to trade one of our cars in and get a newer car but we can forget that now.
“We need more of a police presence and CCTV on this road especially because people come through here from the shops.”
Neighbour Helen Limm, 40, agreed that CCTV was needed and said she was going to buy her own.
“I said to the council before that we need CCTV,” she said.
Jenny Kimpton, 30, added: “They should have CCTV all along here as cars get keyed and stones thrown at them.
“I’ve had my car scratched so many times.
“The last time it happened I went out and they threw stones at me.”
Julie Lears’s Ford Focus was among the nine cars hit in Brisbane Road.
She said: “I heard a really loud bang and my neighbour came and told us and everybody came out.
“It is crazy and it’s stressful and I’ve got to pay £75 on my insurance excess.”
Heather Legg, 37, was at home with her husband Fred, and her friend Marie Granados, 36 when his Ford Mondeo was damaged and a Vauxhall Meriva courtesy car being used by Ms Granados was struck.
Mrs Legg said: “It sounded like fireworks to start with and then the car alarm was going off.
“It would be helpful if we had CCTV.”
Ms Granados added: “It’s like a car massacre.
“A lot of the residents said they don’t talk to each other so much normally so it has brought them all together.”
'Devastated' councillor praises police
BOROUGH councillor Mark Tewkesbury said he was “devastated” about what had happened ahead of last night’s residents’ meeting.
Speaking ahead of a Partners and Communities Together meeting Mr Tewkesbury praised the police for being out reassuring residents.
He said: “A lot of progress has been made in Littlemoor over the last few years working in partnership with the police.
“I’m devastated to have this take place and my thoughts go out to those people who’ve had their cars damaged.”
Between £1milllion and £2million has been earmarked for the estate after the Big Lottery Fund identified the area as in need of regeneration.
But Mr Tewkesbury said he is concentrating on what has happened “At the moment I’m just horrified that this has happened,” he added.
