Security.

A WEYMOUTH-BASED security company has won a major contract to support the 2011 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta.

Event Security Weymouth will be responsible for round the clock security at the regatta, which takes place between June 6 to 11 at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.

The firm will provide uniformed staff for the duration of the event, which takes on an even greater significance as the world’s best sailors battle for supremacy on the 2012 waters.

Director Dan Wilson said: “We’re thrilled that the team at Skandia Sail for Gold has awarded this contract to a local firm.”

Events.

THE Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has welcomed the International Sailing Federation’s selection of sailing events for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The ISAF Council has voted on the slate of 10 events which will form the sailing competition for the Rio Games in five years’ time.

Key changes will include the introduction of a women’s skiff event and the revival of a multihull category which will be a two-person mixed event – ie one man, one woman – at the expense of the men’s and women’s keelboat events.

John Derbyshire, the RYA’s racing manager and performance director, described the decision to axe keelboats as being ‘more reflective of the mass participation of young sailors’ within the sport.

Evaluation trials will be held between now and November 2012 to determine which boats will be used for the women’s skiff and multihull events, and also to decide whether to replace the men’s and women’s windsurfing events with kitesurfing.

Tickets.

A RALLYING cry has gone out to schools to ensure they do not miss out on tickets to London 2012.

In addition to the 125,000 tickets available to London schoolchildren through the Ticketshare scheme, a further 50,000 tickets will be distributed to schools across the UK.

An additional 25,000 tickets will also be distributed by the British Olympic Association, British Paralympic Association, Sport England and Tickets for Troops.

The Ticketshare initiative is part of the London 2012 Get Set network, the official London 2012 education programme for schools and colleges across the UK.

Walk2012.

AN EPIC 180-mile walk from the 2012 sailing venue to the Olympic park in London is making progress and members of the public are urged to sign up.

Walk2012 organisers are coming to Dorset next week to finalise the route, which will encompass the coast at Worth Matravers, past Corfe Castle, through Wareham forest, along the Stour through Wimborne, joining the Castleman trailway near Ferndown into Ringwood and on into the New Forest.

Former Weymouth schoolboy Mark StanleyMark StanleyMark and his partner Felicity Ford are delighted with the success so far.

He said: “This month we are finalising the route.

“The Girl Guides have offered us their amazing Foxlease centre to use during the walk next summer so we need to build that into the route.

“Once we’ve done this last walk the route – The Games Way – will be finalised and I’ll start writing the guide.”
