A MAN has appeared in court accused of exposing himself to young children and causing other youngsters to watch sexual videos and images.

Wayne Edwin Whatley, 32, of Buxton Road, Weymouth, appeared at Weymouth Magistrates Court yesterday for the first day of his trial.

He denies a charge that between May 27, 2004 and May 27, 2009 in Weymouth, for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification, he intentionally caused a child under the age of 13, namely nine years old, to look at an image of a person engaging in a sexual activity.

He also denies a second charge that between September 1, 2010 and October 11, 2010, he intentionally exposed himself intending that someone would see and be caused alarm or distress.

Jonathan Kingdon, prosecuting, said that the charge of showing images involved two nine-year-old girls and the exposure charge related to Whatley exposing himself to two young girls under the age of 10.

The court was shown police video interviews of the young girls and they were questioned about their evidence by video link.

The two witnesses in the alleged case of the indecent images said that Whatley had shown them videos on his mobile phone. One witness said he had shown them videos in a bedroom of a house and the other said that he had shown them the videos in the living room of the property.

One witness said: “He didn’t say anything, just sat there and let us watch it like we were really interested. He said ‘there’s the phone and there’s more videos on there if you want to watch it’.”

The other witness said she had been shown the videos by Whatley in the living room.

She said: “He showed us pictures of naked girls on his phone. It was just pictures of naked models.

“There were more pictures than videos.”

Ian Brazier, defending, cross-examined the witnesses and outlined discrepancies in the girls’ different accounts of events, highlighting differences in when and where the offences were alleged to have taken place.

He also asked the girls about the type of phone Whatley had used to show them the videos – one replied that it was a sliding black Nokia phone and the other that it was a Sony Ericsson.

The court then heard from one of the alleged victims in the exposure case. She said that Whatley had told her he had piercings and had exposed himself.

She said that Whatley had tried to hug her afterwards when he was fully dressed.

She said: “After he looked really ashamed and his head was down and his face was, like, really scared and sad.”

She added: “I heard him say ‘what have I done?’”

The trial continues tomorrow.
