I would like to respond to AP Taylor’s letter about the confusion over speed limits on the Weymouth Relief Road (‘Get the speed limit signs right’, Your Say, May 11).
Following Mrs Taylor’s phone call about the different signs, Dorset Highways immediately liaised with the Highways Agency to ensure that the correct speed limit signs were being installed.
During the construction of the main carriageway of the Relief Road, the A354 was temporarily restricted to 40mph, and this was kept in place during the Highways Agency work on Stadium Roundabout for safety reasons.
However, while the 40mph speed limit signs were removed at the completion of this work, the national speed limit signs were not put in place until the Highways Agency carried out its finishing works at the start of May.
This meant that drivers from Dorchester would have seen a 40mph sign before joining the A354, whereas drivers from the A35 would have still been adhering to the national speed limit.
All the correct signs are now in place.
