A DORSET worker has been making the most of his deployment to Afghanistan to raise more than £1,800 for services charity Help for Heroes.

Scott Price, from Puddletown, works for G3 Systems Ltd. The company, which has offices in Weymouth and Portland, works to support humanitarian aid initiatives, global defence and government departments. Staff also help to build camps for military operations.

As part of his job Mr Price is often ‘deployed’ to run various construction tasks in Camp Bastion, the base of the British Armed Forces in Afghanistan. The base can hold 21,000 people and is situated north of Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand Province.

He said that he was ‘touched by the plight of wounded servicemen and women returning home from Afghanistan’ and decided to raise money for Help for Heroes on his next deployment.

He has recently returned from Helmand Province where he completed a gym triathalon of one million metres or just over 621 miles using the running machine, cycling machine and rowing machine in the 3 Para Regiment’s gym in Camp Bastion.

Mr Price said: “As a company, G3 Systems has been, and remains, very much involved in the construction, extension and improvements to the British Military Hospital in Camp Bastion and consequently I have become all too aware of the human cost of the conflict in Afghanistan and the need to help our wounded troops in any way possible.”

In total Mr Scott cycled 466 miles on a stationary bike, rowed 93 miles on a rowing machine, and ran 62 miles on a treadmill, splitting the activities up over a total of 50 hours during his most recent stint at Camp Bastion.

Mr Scott said: “I didn’t do any specific preparatory training for the challenge – I keep myself fit anyway.

“But it was another focus for getting to the gym to complete my training, especially as the biggest challenge was how to find the time to get to the gym during the long and busy working days in Camp Bastion.

“Normally I managed to fit the time for the challenge in at the end of my long working days.”

So far Mr Price has raised more than £1,893.
