SISTERS are doing it for themselves and donating food to a Dorset women’s refuge.

Curves, a women’s gym in Weymouth, teamed up with Asda supermarket to start a ‘food drive’ for the West Dorset women’s refuge and to stockpile food for Weymouth women’s refuge.

The Weymouth refuge was closed last year but campaigners are hoping services can be launched again as owner Weymouth and Portland Borough Council is in discussions with Magna Housing about the future of the site.

Curves ran a food appeal and instead of asking members to pay a service fee to join up they asked for non-perishable food and toiletries.

Owner of Curves Barbara Hart said: “We are committed to working with the community and have been giving to the refuge for several years. It’s good to be able to give back to the community.

“It’s all for ladies and it’s a nice way to help someone else who is having problems. It can happen to any one of us.”

Asda started the drive off by donating 20lb of food including tins, cereal, tea and coffee and toiletries and Curves received 302lb of donations.

Councillor Gill Taylor, who is a supporter of the refuge, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Curves and to Asda and everyone that got involved in the food drive and helped the cause.”
