A SCHEME offering a friend for people in need is appealing for volunteers.
The Dorchester Befriending Scheme is holding an event for local people to come and find out about volunteering today at the Dorford Centre in Bridport Road from 10am to noon.
The scheme offers support, from sharing a cup of tea to doing shopping to giving carers respite time, for people who need help.
The Dorchester Befriending Scheme currently operates out of the Atrium Centre in Weymouth Avenue and has 50 volunteers helping around 150 local people.
Penny Cole, who has been involved with the scheme for around four years, said: “When my husband was ill I found it hard to get some basic help before he died, so I when I saw a leaflet on the scheme I decided to get involved.
“I really didn’t want other people to be in a similar position.
“The great thing about the scheme is that anyone can get involved irrespective of their other commitments.
“It offers people the chance to get out and socialise.
Anyone who would like to find out more can come along on the day and speak to the team.
Those people who can’t make it should call co-ordinator Susan Francis on 07795 645162.
