NURSE Katie Ryan said that raising the profile of nurses with events such as International Nurses Day was very important.

Katie, 28, is originally from Dorchester and attended the Thomas Hardye School, before doing nursing at university.

She now works at Great Ormond Street children’s Hospital in London working both with patients and helping to train the nurses of the future.

She said: “I started out with the St John Ambulance when I was nine years old and absolutely loved it.”

She added: “Now as part of my role I get to help develop the Florence Nightingales of the future.”

Katie said that the job was very rewarding and that nurses got to really build up a rapport with their patients and really get to know them.

She said her most rewarding experience had been one of her first experiences in an operation theatre.

She said: “The most rewarding thing was being part of a baby’s first bone marrow transplant, it was my first experience of it.”

Katie is encouraging more people to consider a career in nursing. For more information visit the Nursing careers website www.nursing.nhscareers.nhs.uk
