I HAVE travelled the new relief road to Dorchester from Weymouth and found the lane markings clear and the speed limit signs reasonable.

Then I came back. The last sign leaving the Tesco roundabout is 40.

The next sign, approaching Littlemoor roundabout, is 40 which becomes 50 and 30 and 50 as you proceed.

Foolish me not wanting points on my licence I obeyed the signs. Of course being Dorset with no excuse being accepted no one else did. From Dorchester to Littlemoor anyone who could get past did so and with the double white lines and oncoming traffic they were few and far between.

I phoned the Highways department and like everyone else, he hadn’t noticed and said: “I go home that way.” Three weeks later and still no national limit sign and was I popular! I hope that the bus wasn’t late and that the three police motor cyclists booked themselves (no excuse).

Can it be that the new excuse acceptable to all will be hang the signs and use your common sense? How far would one get with that one, your Honour?

Is it too much to ask that at least Highways get the speed limit signs right and act promptly when errors are pointed out.

Was I the only pilgrim to notice? Was the whole of Dorset driving without proper care and attention? Tally ho!
