In the gloomy atmosphere pervading the country at the moment, there was a recent spirit-lifting event on April 23 in Weymouth’s Bob Lucas Football Stadium.
I was with about 650 other fans who went to watch the first team’s fight for survival in the Zamoretto League.
It has to be said that, despite all the odds (a 10-point deduction at the beginning of the season included), board infighting and players wages being held over, the players fought for themselves and pride and produced a fantastic game.
I would like to assure the team that as the fans left the stadium after the game (which Weymouth won 3-0) there was for the home fans a sense of jubilation, that I felt extended a quarter mile radius of the ground.
I am so glad I went that day.
The team’s performances seemed to strengthen towards the end of the season, a special mention here for the coach and all the team that were in that match on that day.
A special mention of Warren Byerley (striker par excellence) who is always a joy to watch and has Weymouth written on his heart.
Well done to all, and see you next season, hopefully a season free of all the things that made the season just gone such a trial. The lads deserve it.
