RESIDENTS turned out at polling stations across south and west Dorset to vote in the local elections – and to decide whether they want to change the system for electing MPs.
Candidates stood for seats on Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, West Dorset District Council, Portland Town Council and Dorchester Town Council.
As well as choosing their favourite candidate, voters were also asked to make their choice in a national referendum about the way that MPs are elected.
People were asked whether the alternative vote system should be used as opposed to the first past the post system.
• Counting of the votes will take place today and a full list of results will appear in Saturday’s Echo.
