THE Broomhills site in Bridport has cleared another hurdle as the front runner for a new waste transfer station.
Members of West Dorset District Council’s policy scrutiny committee has backed a recommendation that the authority has no objection in principle to the location as the preferred option.
Now the recommendation will go to the authority’s executive committee for consideration, before being passed to Dorset County Council as its formal response.
The district council’s formal response states: “There are no major objections in principle to the siting of the Bridport waste management facility at Broomhills.
“However, necessary steps need to be taken to ensure that issues such as air quality and contamination are addressed in further stages.”
However, ward councillor Gillian Summers said many residents were against the proposed site at Broomhills.
“They are very much concerned with an increase in traffic and the danger of big vehicles coming out of that road,” she said.
Coun Summers also said she was concerned about air quality limits being breached on the Crown and Greens roundabout as well as East Road.
The county council has already launched a £77,000 investigation into the site, which will cover areas such as cost, ground investigations, flood risk assessments, transport assessments, junction design and safety, studies into protected species, pedestrian access, and landowner discussions.
If a planning application is submitted, there will be a formal consultation period for residents to have their say.
