ICE frost and snow didn’t deter folk over the St Catherine’s Day’s weekend of celebrations of November 27 and 28
St Catherine’s Day is actually on November 25 but being midweek the events had to wait until the weekend.
On Saturday, November 27 about 50 people gathered in Strangways Hall for a slap up supper made and donated by members of the congregation of St Nicholas Church.
A huge array of tempting main dishes was on offer with puddings to expand the waistline to follow.
How the dishes made it to the hall still hot amazed me as the temperature was below freezing outside.
The generous donations collected on the evening will be being given to Julia’s House Hospice for children, which is the chosen Christmas charity of St Nicholas Church.
ON Sunday, November 28 many people from far and wide braved the weather and gathered at St Catherine’s Chapel on the hill for a special service at 3.00pm.
Thankfully the frozen ground made the climb up the hill less treacherous as there have unusually been cows on those pastures for some months.
Wrapped warmly the Beaminster West Gallery Singers and musicians in costume joined in the service with their jolly brand of C19 music.
Afterwards everyone was invited to St Nicholas church for a much-needed warm up and refreshments, which were followed by evensong, accompanied by the Beaminster singers.
THE Royal British Legion meeting for December will take the form of a Hot Supper in Strangways Hall on Thursday, November 9, 7 for 7.30pm.
The cost of this 2-course meal will be £7.50per head (non members £10).
Contact the entertainments chairman Des Baker for more information on 01305 267617.

Instead they will have Christmas lunch in Portesham village hall on Tuesday, December14, 12.30 for 1.00pm.

On Friday, December 17 meet at the church gate at 6.30pm to sing around the east side of the village.
