SWIMMERS are taking the plunge for charity cash at the Thomas Hardye Leisure Centre in Dorchester.

Organisers from the Lions Club of Dorchester and District hope to raise up to £5,000 from the annual swimarathon.

The two-day fundraiser is being held on Saturday, October 16, from 1pm to 6pm and Sunday, October 17, from 10am to noon.

Spokesman Ken Otter said: “The Swimarathon is always a great success and can raise considerable funds for each team’s chosen charity and Lions local projects. “Swimarathon 2009 helped many charities around the Dorchester area.

“The Lions are very grateful for the continuing support of the businesses and residents of Dorchester and surrounding areas. “Without this they would not be able to help so many people.”

He added: “Each year the Swimarathon raises between £3,000 and £5,000. “This is split equally between the participants’ nominated charity and Lions local charities. “More than 30 teams of six can take part. The age of swimmers ranges from under five years to pensioners. “Each swimmer swims two lengths at a time and each team swims for a total of 55 minutes.”

The event takes place at the Thomas Hardye Leisure Centre in Coburg Road, Dorchester.

Participants can use any stroke. Teams of six must complete an entry form, hand it in and turn up on the day at their allotted time.

The event sponsors this year are the Thomas Hardye Leisure Centre, Sportsgear, plus Edwards and Keeping.

Mr Otter said: “These local businesses have very kindly provided funds to cover the total cost of staging this event, including the hire of the pool. “Their generosity enables the club to donate all the monies raised to local good causes. “Once again this year, there will be an opportunity for swimmers to raise extra funds for their charity. “Extra monetary prizes are available for charity for early payment of sponsorship monies.”

He added: “The majority of funds raised by the club throughout the year go straight back into the local community, helping groups and individuals.

“But a small proportion goes to provide humanitarian aid on a national and international basis through Lions Clubs International.”

Entry and sponsorship forms are available from The Thomas Hardye Leisure Centre, Sportsgear in Dorchester and Goulds household store. People can also telephone Lion Andy Rose on 01305 267481.
