A CRACKDOWN on drunkenness and anti-social behaviour will take place on the Weymouth to Bristol train tomorrow evening.

It follows a rise in journeys marred by booze-fuelled anti-social behaviour on the last direct train from the resort to other West Country counties at weekends.

Tomorrow night, extra British Transport Police (BTP) officers will be undertaking uniformed patrols on the train service, on the final Saturday of the summer season.

There will be also be an alcohol ban for passengers and First Great Western, supported by BTP officers, will be ensuring any booze carried by passengers is disposed of before they board the train.

The crackdown, follows an increase in trouble reported to the transport police aboard the 8.21pm train from Weymouth to Bristol Temple Meads during recent weekends.

Large numbers of people use the train to return home to Somerset, Wiltshire, Bath and Bristol after spending a day out in Dorset.

British Transport Police officers will be working closely with their colleagues from Dorset Police and Avon and Somerset Police during the evening.

A police spokesman said: “Unfortunately, we have seen an increase in anti-social behaviour and alcohol-fuelled disorder on board this service on Saturday nights.

“This sort of behaviour is absolutely unacceptable and makes regular, law-abiding passengers feel uncomfortable and unsafe in what is otherwise a very safe environment.”
